Come talk to Kathryn

"It's not fair to say that practice makes perfect.  There is no such thing as perfect in our world.  We are all learning and improving and making mistakes every day.  That is not to say that I don't believe you should encourage practice.  We certainly should. And now we have a place where Practice makes perfect sense!

I wanted to provide a place in Jacksonville where there would be a synergy of creativity.  You should feel the energy in this place!  People walk in and say "I want to be a part of this!'"

Kathryn McAvoy is an entrepreneur who got her start at IBM.  After 13 years with "Big Blue" she went out on her own to do business consulting and communications training.  She opened a few business along the way, including Acme Barricades and Elegant Attic.

In her spare time, Kathryn has served on many nonprofit boards and been a volunteer in many areas of Jacksonville, including several schools, The Mayor's Film and Television Advisory Board, the Jacksonville Film Festival, and the Jacksonville Zoo.

She has found a way to merge entrepreneurship and volunteering, and thus became a  Social Entrepreneur.

One of her goals is to provide opportunities to the less privileged artists, right beside the privileged students. “ I want a place where all kids can get connected – connected with other talented kids, connected to mentors, and connected with the Arts.  Art helps bridge the gap in our city.”

She is providing an outlet for people to give back to the community through the arts.  Several talented Jacksonville natives who have made it big in other big cities, are returning so they can contribute to the Academy.

“We’ve had dancers come back and offer to donate their time; we’ve had music producers offer to supply us with equipment and technicians.  They found us - and we are not even opened yet! People really do want to get involved and give back to help their community."
